The 72nd session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 72) opened at the UN Headquarters in New York City on Tuesday, September 12, 2017. The most significant part of it – the annual General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly that will take place September 19 – 25, 2017. It is a unique occasion for world leaders to gather at UN Headquarters to discuss global issues.
The theme for this year’s debate was chosen by President Miroslav Lajcak (President-elect of the 72nd General Assembly) as “Focusing on People: Striving for Peace and a Decent Life for All on a Sustainable Planet.”
During the General Debate world leaders will address issues in five key areas: the threat to global peace and security posed by North Korea; deescalating the conflict in Syria; broadening multilateral counter terrorism efforts to defeat ISIS and other terrorist organizations; taking bold steps on UN reform; and bolstering support for humanitarian assistance to ongoing emergencies, in particular for refugees and the communities that host them.
