Switzerland Moves to Protect Cash Payments for Future Generations

Switzerland officially enshrined the right to use cash in its federal constitution following a historic national referendum. It has become the fourth European nation to protect cash in its constitution, following Hungary, Slovakia, and Slovenia. On March 8, 2026, Swiss voters strongly backed the measure, with 73.4% supporting the continued use of banknotes and coins.
The amendment was introduced as a more moderate response to a proposal by the Swiss Freedom Movement, which had collected over 100,000 signatures to force a national referendum.

The amendment legally requires the Swiss National Bank to guarantee an adequate supply of physical cash.
