On June 17, 2026, the European Parliament approved changes to EU policy on the return of third-country nationals staying illegally in the EU. This Return Regulation was approved by a vote of 418 to 218.
The legislation introduces offshore return hubs in non-EU countries, extends detention periods for migrants awaiting deportation, requires cooperation with return procedures, and allows deportation orders issued by one Schengen country to be recognized and enforced across the Schengen Area.
“The new rules seek to simplify and speed up procedures, with full respect for fundamental rights and international law, including the principle of non-refoulement and the prohibition of collective expulsions, while preventing abuses and unauthorised movements within the EU”.
This is the strictest migration law in EU history. When the result was announced, MEPs started chanting “Send them back.”
