J.B. Gattini, “Women’s Right to Choose” is no Longer Protected by the Federal Laws in America

I am not even surprised that in this upside-down world another backward decision (as if we didn’t have enough insanity) was made on June 24, 2022, by the US Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade, marking a major change in abortion rights in the United States of America. Let’s be honest – the decision to overturn the judgment made by the US Supreme Court 50 years ago in Roe v. Wade case was “sneaked in” to the US Supreme Court’s agenda when nobody expected it, except a certain group of people interested in this decision at the time when everyone’s attention was somewhere else. It is obvious that this decision was not made or influenced by women who have ever had issues with bearing a child, pregnancy, rape, etc.

What was Roe v. Wade case about?

The case began in 1970 in Texas as a challenge against a law banning any kind of abortion unless the mother’s life was in danger. A pregnant Texas woman, Norma McCorvey (Jane Roe), brought a lawsuit against Henry Wade, Dallas County District Attorney, in a Texas federal court.  She was a single pregnant woman and wanted to terminate her pregnancy safely by a doctor. She stated that she could not afford to travel outside Texas. She could not get a legal abortion in Texas because her life was not in danger. Her lawsuit claimed that the Texas law violated her right to privacy, protected by the First, Fourth, Fifth, Ninth, and Fourteenth Amendments. Roe sued “on behalf of herself and all other women” in the same situation.

The case slowly made its way to the US Supreme Court. It ruled that a state law that banned abortion was unconstitutional. The decision said that a woman’s right to privacy extended to the fetus/unborn child she was carrying.

The decision divided the United States of America into pro-life and pro-choice groups and still remains controversial. Pro-life supporters argue that the unborn baby has the same right to life as other people, and the government should intervene to protect it. Pro-choice supporters believe that the unborn baby is not the same as a person, that the woman has the right to choose what she wants to do with her body, and that the government should not intervene.

Are you pro-life or pro-choice? When does a life of a child/ soul begin?

I am a staunch believer that a woman has a right to be in charge of her body. However, I do not impose my views on anyone. We should make our own choices!!!

Do you believe that some government or priest knows better or has the right to choose for you what you should or not do?

It is obvious that people have different opinions and understanding about when life begins, what is right and wrong based on their experience, background, indoctrination…  I am not trying to argue. I want to offer a possible solution to this dilemma.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION

This solution came from the brilliant mind of my ex-husband Peter (we are still friends).  He thought of a system that could make most Americans happy while making the decision to support or not women’s right to choose.

Every year, we have to file our tax returns before April 15. The tax return form, in his opinion, should contain a “box” that would be marked if you want/ agree your taxes to go to support women’s rights to choose programs and should be left blank if you don’t. This way, a decision would be based on personal choice or religious beliefs that a person has and he/she would not carry the burden of doing something wrong.
