Rochelle Rice, Top 10 Secrets for Weight Management

– Eat Breakfast! If you had a late night binge (finished eating around 10pm before going to sleep) be sure to eat SOMETHING by 10am to get your body on track for the day. Break (the) Fast. Erratic eating is the greatest culprit when it comes to weight and metabolism. No matter how the night before went down, don’t skip breakfast.

– Pee when you need to! Shockingly, a large number of women IGNORE the signals of their body when it comes time to eliminate. You are either “too busy,” the bathroom is too far away or it’s too not clean, or, or, or…! Overriding your body’s natural signals of elimination makes you almost ‘deaf’ to other signals the body may be trying to tell you.

– MOVE YOUR BODY! OK – this may be a given and a no brainer, but so many of us miss the opportunities before us. You have to move your body, and you have to be present in your body while you are moving. Say to yourself, “I’m moving my body. I’m walking. I’m climbing stairs. I’m walking around the grocery store.” It ALL counts.

– Stop Smoking! I hope for many of you this is an easy one to check off. But if you are still smoking, consider cutting back slowly.  While you may be concerned about gaining weight if you stop smoking, the benefits far outweigh the risks. Begin a movement program BEFORE you quit smoking so there is less shock on your system.

– The RIGHT Support from Family and Friends. You don’t need someone who is going to nag you constantly. You need someone who will respect your needs and be honest with you. You must first be honest with yourself and very clear about the type of support you need – verbal or physical. Sometimes it’s just someone to meet at class or walk with you. Keep it real.

– Sleep. Your hormones are off and metabolism is slower when you are sleep deprived. The muscles of the body need rest to physically move the next day. The brain needs to quiet the chatter in order to make empowering decisions for your life. The internal organs need to rest in order to function at optimally – liver, stomach, kidneys, adrenal glands.

– Drink Water.  If you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated which may lead to caffeine or sugar fixes – especially in the late afternoon.  Water fills you up, boosts your metabolism by helping your organs function better, and keeps you healthy by flushing toxins from your body.  It’s not easy to increase water intake, but start slowly and your bladder will adjust.

– Nourish your Heart. Too often you may feel depleted from giving and doing for everyone but yourself.  What nourishes your heart? Friends, music, a walk in the park? The heart contains cells that synthesize and release the so-called feel-good hormones: dopamine and norepinephrine.  Take time to write a few things down that nourish you so you have them when you need them.

– Listen to Your Body. All of the suggestions so far mean listening to your body. Develop a sense of awareness and understanding of what you physically feel – the good and the bad.  If you continually override the body’s signals, your entire system gets out of whack. Some women may argue they are too busy to listen. I argue, not listening could kill you.

– BREATHE!  This naturally occurring phenomenon of the body, life itself, is often completely ignored and forgotten. When stress is high or emotions are low, your breathing becomes irregular. Your natural connection to the diaphragm, the rise and fall of the abdomen, the intake of oxygen and release of toxins is perhaps the most powerful weight management system ever created. FREE.
